1. World Malaria Day
The theme for World Malaria Day this year is ‘End Malaria for Good’.
Malaria is caused due to the Plasmodium parasites which are carried by the female – anopheles mosquito. Out of five, two species of the parasite – P falciparum and P vivax – pose the greatest threat to human beings. Once the mosquito bites the person, the parasite enters the liver infecting the red blood cells.
2. International DNA Day
April 25 is celebrated as International DNA Day. In 1953, biologists James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin and others published a few papers on the structure of DNA in Nature, the science journal.
3. 200 villages to be taken up under Adarsh Gram
Karnataka Minister for Social Welfare and Chitradurga district in-charge H. Anjaneya has said that 200 villages in the State would be developed with the Rs. 80 crore released by the government under the Prime Minister’s Adarsh Gram Scheme
4. Bihar adopts GST; Nitish terms it historic
Both the Houses of Bihar Legislature on Monday unanimously adopted the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill along with the Bihar taxation (Amendment) Bill, becoming the second State after Telangana, to pave the way for roll out of the GST from July 1.
5. New defence doctrine: Integrating operations and expanding capabilities
The Union Defence Ministry is set to formally release India’s Joint Defence Doctrine this week.
The 80-pages document is said to underline the need for integrated application of military power to attain better operational and economic efficiency.
It further enables tri-service co-ordination enabling the Army, Navy and Air Force to tackle a whole new spectrum of challenges.
6. HindRail, an all-in-one solution for railway queries
PM Modi’s Digital India move has found a kindred spirit in IRCTC as they solidify their stance with changing times.
Indian Railways is developing a mega app which will be rolled out in June. It will be able to answer all queries by travellers and will also integrate existing IRCTC apps.
7. Indian cows to get their own ‘Aadhaar’
After tightening norms on smuggling and slaughter for the protection of cattle, the government seems to have gone a tad bit overboard in its ‘gau raksha’ mission.
After a similar recommendation was met with amusement last year, the Centre has now officially informed the SC that it has formed a committee to generate unique identity numbers (like Aadhaar) for each cow in India.
8. Malabar 2017 to focus on anti-submarine warfare : Indian Navy
India and the US are set to conduct Malabar Exercise in July in Bay of Bengal. Termed America’s largest military exercise conducted with non-NATO countries, this is the first major military drill under Donald Trump’s Presidency.
Purported to be bigger than previous editions, the Japanese forces are also expected to participate.
China, bothered by the trilateral engagement is likely to monitor the exercise closely.
9. Now ‘Give It Up’ campaign targets food subsidies
After one crore households gave up LPG subsidies under the government’s ‘Give It Up’ campaign, the Centre has now sought support from states on a similar scheme on food subsidy.
The food ministry reportedly wants fair price shops to display “real cost of the subsidy” for wheat and rice, to encourage those who can do without the sop to give it up.
