1. Over 11.44 lakh PANs deactivated

De-duplication of PAN at tax department


More than 11.44 lakh permanent account numbers (PANs) were deleted or de-activated in cases where multiple PANs were found allotted to one person, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
This was informed by Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
“One PAN for one person is the guiding principle for allotment of PAN,” Gangwar said.

2. Sebi approves appointment of Dhirendra Swarup as chairman of BSE

Swarup was public interest director of BSE.


Leading bourse BSE Ltd on Tuesday announced that market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has approved the appointment of Dhirendra Swarup as the chairman of the board of directors of the company with effect from July 31.
Dhirendra Swarup, former Chairman of Pension Funds Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), has over four decades of experience across finance, budgeting, public debt management, public policy and pension Reforms.Swarup was also chairman of the Cash and Debt Management Committee of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2000 to 2003.

3. East Bengal honours Dhanraj Pillay with ‘Bharat Gaurav’

Former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay was on Tuesday honoured by East Bengal football club on its foundation day here with its highest award, Bharat Gaurav.
Former India international Subhash Bhowmick, a member of the 1970 Asian Games bronze medal-winning national football team, and former national team coach Syed Naeemuddin were honoured with lifetime achievement awards.
Meanwhile, East Bengal centre-back Gurwinder Singh bagged the Footballer of the Year award while Boddupalli Amit was adjudged Cricketer of the Year.

4. Government launches e-RaKAM portal for selling agri produce

e-RaKAM to help Farmers hugely


The government today launched a portal, e-RaKAM, to provide a platform to sell agricultural produce. The portal is a joint initiative by state-run-auctioneer MSTC and Central Warehousing Corporation arm CRWC.
E-RaKAM is a first-of-its-kind initiative that leverages technology to connect farmers of the smallest villages to the biggest markets of the world through internet and e-RaKAM centres.The statement said farmers would be paid through e-Payment directly into their bank accounts.

5. IRCTC launches book now, pay later scheme for tatkal tickets

IRCTC processes 130,000 tatkal transactions daily


IRCTC announcned on wedeneday that People can now pay later for tickets booked under the tatkal quota on their website.
For tatkal tickets, IRCTC users will be able to pay via cash, debit card or credit card by opting to have tickets delivered at their doorstep, said IRCTC payment provider Anduril Technologies.
The new feature eliminates the transaction failures as often the money gets debited and the ticket is not issued due to multiple reasons.

6. Four, including two Army men, killed in J&K encounters

In an another shoot-out in Kulgam, two militants killed


Two Army men, including a major, were killed and another jawan was injured when militants opened fire on a search party of security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir, police said on Thursday.
Officials have told that The injured were taken to Army’s 92 base hospital, where two of them, including a major, succumbed to death.
The search operation at Zaipora is on, the official said.

7. 31 lakh trained under PM’s skills scheme

The government today said a total of 30.68 lakh candidates trained or were undergoing training under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in the country as on July 6 this year.
Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that Out of them, 1.47 lakh candidates were from Delhi while 2.46 lakh from Rajasthan.

8. Using H1-B visas to displace US workers a mistake

Synergy between India, US to create jobs in both nations,


Cisco Chairman John Chambers on Wednesday said firms taking Indians to the US for cost arbitrage, displacing American workers, was a “mistake” and it is important that jobs are created in both countries to ensure sustainable growth.
Chambers, who is also Chairman of the newly formed US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), said the two nations can work together to create opportunities in both nations.
Chambers explained that when an Indian company hires 10,000 Americans in the US or Cisco hires in India, the same needs to be “articulated” and that USISPF would play that role.

9. RBI panel to review banks’ lending rates

RBI’s monetary policy


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday said it will set up a panel to review banks’ benchmark lending rate, after it noticed that lenders were not fully passing on reductions in the policy rate.
This committee will also look at the possibility of linking the marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) to a market-determined benchmark rate.
Bankers feel that the current system of MCLR is reasonably responsive and linking to a market rate could lead to interest rate risk.

10. Cabinet approves scrapping of no detention policy in schools

Right to Education Act 2009


The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved scrapping of no detention policy in schools.
Under the Right to Education Act, 2009, no child admitted in a school will be held back in any class or expelled till the completion of elementary education covering Class 1-8.
MoS (HRD) Mahendra Nath Pandey had said that “There has been a unanimous decision of withdrawing the no detention policy from the Right to Education Act 2009,”
