1. Village Financial Services gets award
Village Financial Services, a Kolkata-based NBFC – MFI has bagged MSME Banking Excellence Awards 2016. Village Financial Services won the award under the category ‘Best NBFC-MFI for Promotional Schemes’.
2. Cabinet approves for MoU between DSSC, Wellington and DSCSC, Dhaka
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Mirpur, Dhaka on cooperation concerning military education in the field of strategic and operational studies.
The MoU also enhances public accountability by way of exchange of information and technology between India and Bangladesh.
3. Centre to set up Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra at Rajghat
The government will set up Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra under Swachh Bharat Mission at Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS), Rajghat, to mark the centenary year of the Champaran Satyagraha.
It will be set up by the Ministry for Drinking Water and Sanitation.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has also developed an ‘e-guide’ (audio-visual) app e3.eguide.net.in to create awareness for tourists visiting the National Museum in Delhi.
4. Cabinet approves New Central Sector Scheme – SAMPADA for agro-marine processing
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given its approval for re-structuring the schemes of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) under new central Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters (SAMPADA) for the period 2016-20 coterminous with the 14th Finance Commission cycle.
SAMPADA is allocated a total of Rs. 6,000 crore. The objective of SAMPADA is to supplement agriculture, modernize processing and decrease agri-waste.
5. Centre advances target of providing electricity to all from 2022 to 2018
Power Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the government has decided to achieve the goal by December next year. The earlier target for providing electricity to all is advanced to year 2018 from 2022
6. Andhra to ink sister state agreements with California, Iowa, Illinois
Andhra Pradesh will sign ‘sister state’ agreements with states of California, Iowa and Illinois during Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to US to receive 2017 US-India Business Council’s “Transformative Chief Minister Award.”
7. Cabinet approves Vijayawada Airport as international airport
The Union Cabinet gave its approval for the declaration of Vijayawada Airport as international airport, as per the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
The declaration of Vijayawada Airport as an international airport has been taken up keeping in view the passenger traffic growth, demands from airlines and the Andhra Pradesh Government.
8. World’s first quantum computing machine made in China
Chinese scientists have successfully built the world’s first quantum computing machine that is 24,000 times faster than its international counterparts and may dwarf the processing power of existing supercomputers.
9. UN marks first World Tuna Day with calls to conserve it
The United Nations marked the first World Tuna Day on 2nd May 2017 with calls to conserve one of the globe’s most popular fish to be caught and eaten.
