In today’s episode we will be going to explore THE HINDU’s editorial “The stakes in Manipur” for words with rich vocabulary.

 

Word 1

Contest 

Class : Noun

Meaning : an event in which people compete for supremacy in a sport or other activity, or in a quality.

Synonyms : Competition, Match

Antonyms : Calm, Quiet

Example Sentences:

The party plans to contest nationwide local elections in June and a general election in 2018.

Food Network producers forbid contestants to talk about the contest.

 

Word 2

Persistence 

Class : Noun

Meaning : the continued or prolonged existence of something

Synonyms : Perseverance, Endurance

Antonyms : Laziness, Weakness

Example Sentences:

Higher cortisol levels were also associated with persistence of obesity over time.

Students must use critical thinking, experimentation, presentation and speaking skills, and persistence.

 

Word 3

Punitive 

Class : Adjective

Meaning : inflicting or intended as punishment

Synonyms : Harsh, Penal

Antonyms : Beneficial, Rewarding

Example Sentences:

Campaigners say the UK’s public interest cost rules are already more punitive than the US, China, and any other country in the EU.

The governor called the proposed tax increases “punitive.”

Precipitate 

Class : Verb

Meaning : Cause an event or situation, typically one that is undesirable to happen suddenly, unexpectedly, or prematurely.

Synonyms : Advance, Accelerate

Antonyms : Slow, Block

Example Sentences:

The movie details how a three-year drought helped precipitate that war.

Nurses gave her medications to sedate her that had the opposite effect and precipitated episodes of delirium.

Insurgent 

Class : Noun

Meaning : a person fighting against a government or invading force; a rebel or revolutionary

Synonyms : Rebel, Agitator

Antonyms : Obedient, Subordinate

Example Sentences:
